Amazon has launched "Alexa for Shopping," an AI-powered assistant that personalizes and automates the online shopping experience. This new service, available to U.S. customers, replaces the previous Rufus AI and offers voice and touch-enabled interaction across various devices like mobile, desktop, and Echo Show.
Alexa for Shopping is designed to go beyond simple product discovery and comparison. It provides tailored recommendations, answers specific shopping queries, and can even create custom shopping guides. The assistant learns from customer habits, preferences, and purchase history to offer more connected and helpful assistance over time.
Key functionalities include product comparison, price tracking, and scheduling recurring orders for essential items. Users can also set up automatic purchases when prices drop, significantly streamlining the shopping process. For instance, you can instruct Alexa to "Add this sunscreen to my cart if the price drops to $10."
Notably, Alexa for Shopping can extend its reach beyond Amazon's marketplace. It can shop across other online stores and utilize a "Buy for Me" feature to complete purchases. This broad capability, while convenient, also raises questions regarding AI autonomy and privacy in the evolving e-commerce landscape.
