Amazon recently announced a new feature for its shopping app: AI-generated product images will now appear in search results. This initiative aims to help customers who may have a specific product in mind but struggle to articulate it using typical search terms. For example, users searching for a "cowl neck" shirt or "rattan" furniture might see AI-created visual examples. The company suggests that selecting one of these AI-generated images will refine the search, directing users to more relevant results powered by Amazon's visual search capabilities.
However, this approach raises several concerns. Displaying artificial product images could be misleading, as customers might mistakenly believe they are being directed to exact matches that aren't actually available. Furthermore, the necessity of generating fake product images is questionable, given Amazon's extensive catalog of real product photographs.
This new feature follows a series of other AI integrations by Amazon, with varying degrees of success. On the more practical side, Amazon uses AI to summarize customer reviews, offering quick insights into product pros and cons. More unconventional applications include AI-generated "shoppable collages" and short audio product summaries by AI experts.
Other AI advancements include Amazon Lens Live for visual product matching, the ability to add text to visual searches, and a Lock Screen visual search widget for iOS. Additionally, Amazon recently replaced its Rufus AI chatbot with Alexa for Shopping, enabling natural language queries via voice and text.
