Beyond Siri: Here are the practical AI features coming to your iPhone in iOS 27
Apple is integrating practical AI features into iOS 27 beyond a revamped Siri, focusing on enhancing existing apps and solving real-world problems. These features, powered by Apple Intelligence, include bill splitting, automated password updates, and smart suggestions in Messages.
Apple is embedding a range of practical AI features across its software in iOS 27, moving beyond a single, overhauled Siri experience. This strategy focuses on integrating AI into apps and services users already utilize, aiming to solve real-world problems and make the iPhone feel smarter and more capable overall. These features will be available to the public later this fall.
One notable addition is an enhanced bill-splitting option within Apple Cash. Users can simply photograph a receipt, and Apple Intelligence will extract key details, allowing for easy division of costs including items, tax, and tip among friends. This feature seamlessly integrates with existing apps like Messages and Apple Cash.
To address password security, iOS 27 introduces an AI-powered feature that identifies weak or compromised passwords and proactively updates them. This alleviates the need for manual updates after data breaches, securely navigating websites and upgrading credentials to stronger versions on the user's behalf.
Messages in iOS 27 will offer intelligent one-tap suggestions based on conversation topics. For instance, it can prompt users to add a request to reminders, suggest relevant photos to share based on keywords, locations, and people, or add events to the Calendar. This works in the background, making interactions smoother.
Another convenient feature, Call Context, will display relevant information during customer service calls, such as confirmation codes for airline reservations. This capability, powered by on-device Apple Intelligence, pulls data from emails for privacy and appears automatically on the call screen. Users can also now add or change Calendar events using natural language descriptions.
The Shortcuts app, previously complex for many, becomes more accessible in iOS 27. Users can now describe desired actions, and Apple Intelligence will create custom automations, simplifying task scripting and workflow creation without requiring extensive technical knowledge.
