Anthropic has unveiled Claude Science, a significant new product aimed at bolstering scientific research, much like Claude Code supports software engineering. This tool is designed to autonomously execute complex research tasks, particularly in computational biology and drug development, by leveraging access to specialized scientific tools. Claude Science is now available to all paid Claude subscribers, marking a major step in Anthropic’s commitment to scientific applications of AI.

This new offering builds upon Anthropic's previous ventures, including plug-ins for scientific software released last October. The elevation of Claude Science to a standalone product alongside Claude Code and Claude Cowork underscores the company's serious focus on AI for scientific advancement. Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic’s head of life sciences, emphasized the product's importance to their mission of developing AI for humanity’s long-term well-being, especially within the life sciences.

Claude Science is engineered to enhance scientists' workflows, not replace existing tools. It not only assists in writing code but also facilitates running that code on powerful computer clusters, a critical yet often challenging aspect of scientific work. Additionally, it prioritizes reproducibility, allowing scientists to meticulously trace and validate their research findings.

While broadly applicable, Claude Science is particularly tailored for molecular and cellular biology and drug development. It integrates with various tools in genetics, chemistry, and protein biology, proving invaluable for researchers seeking new pharmaceutical candidates. Anthropic itself plans to utilize Claude Science in its own research to discover drugs for neglected diseases, combining humanitarian goals with practical product demonstration.

This move positions Anthropic to potentially lead in the field of AI for science, an area where Google DeepMind has long been prominent. With key figures like John Jumper joining Anthropic from DeepMind, and Claude Science demonstrating capabilities akin to a second-year graduate student in scientific projects, Anthropic is rapidly advancing its standing. The company’s focus on ethical AI and its potential to secure significant contracts with pharmaceutical companies hint at a promising future, especially with an impending IPO.
