Dessn, a new design startup, has successfully raised $6 million in funding. The company distinguishes itself with a design tool that allows users to work directly within their codebase, a departure from traditional design software. This innovative approach addresses the limitations of conventional tools that often hinder the imagination of new workflows and features. Dessn's technology enables startups to run their codebases in the cloud without setup costs, abstracting away dependencies for local execution. This facilitates a smoother transition of designs to developers given its production environment integration. Current clients include Color, Wispr, and Mercury.

Founded by Gabriella Hachem and Nim Cheema, Dessn's recent funding round was led by Connect Ventures, with participation from Betaworks and N49P. Cheema emphasized the company's core belief that in a world of commoditized and inexpensive code, design becomes the primary differentiator. Unlike tools focused on ground-up ideation, Dessn is tailored for teams with existing codebases seeking rapid iteration.

A key challenge for Dessn was developing an infrastructure capable of running diverse backend architectures without requiring developer intervention. Hachem highlights Dessn's low switching costs, allowing companies to integrate it for specific projects without abandoning their current design tools. This flexibility, coupled with easy link sharing, sets it apart from competitors.

Dessn leverages AI for design creation, allowing users to prompt their way to new designs, though it can also accommodate traditional toolbars when needed. The founders are "token maximalists," prioritizing the use of tokens to achieve results and dynamically generating toolbars for specific contexts.

While Dessn currently lacks integrations, it plans to incorporate tools like Slack for prototype creation based on discussions, and meeting notetakers like Granola to feed design insights. However, the company intentionally avoids integrating with Figma, believing it would divert teams from production and contradict Dessn's core philosophy.

Dessn offers a free tier for compiling one repository and five prompts weekly, with paid plans starting at $39 per user per month for expanded features, public links, and the option to opt out of AI training. Jordan Crook, a partner at Betaworks, praised Dessn for its perfect fidelity within the codebase and its commitment to providing a delightful user experience.
