Google takes a page out of Meta’s book, announces new audio-powered smart glasses
Google is re-entering the smart glasses market with new AI-powered "audio glasses" developed in partnership with Warby Parker, Gentle Monster, and Samsung. These glasses will pair with Android and iOS devices, allowing users to issue verbal commands and interact with Google's ecosystem, including Gemini, for tasks like ordering coffee.
Google is making a strategic return to the smart glasses market, announcing a new line of AI-powered "audio glasses." This initiative marks Google's renewed focus on wearable technology after its previous venture with Google Glass. The company is collaborating with design firms Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, alongside Samsung, for the development of these new devices. They are expected to be available later this year.
The new audio glasses are designed to seamlessly integrate with both Android and iOS devices, offering broad compatibility. Users will be able to control the glasses and access Google's ecosystem of applications and services, including its advanced AI, Gemini, through simple verbal commands. A demonstration showcased a user ordering coffee online purely by speaking to the glasses.
This re-entry by Google comes at a time when the smart glasses sector has seen significant investment and innovation from major tech companies, particularly Meta, as well as numerous startups. Google's earlier attempt with Google Glass, while pioneering, faced public and social challenges. The current landscape, however, suggests a more receptive environment for intelligent eyewear, with a greater focus on practical applications and user-friendly interaction.
