Meta’s new ‘AI Mode’ on Facebook pulls from public info across its platforms

Meta is introducing new AI features to Facebook, including an "AI Mode" that allows users to search the platform using natural language. This mode uses Meta AI to synthesize answers from public posts, including those in Groups and Reels, offering a new way to find information without endless scrolling.

Beyond search, Facebook is also adding AI-powered editing tools. Users can now apply collage cutouts and transition effects to video montages, and use photo presets to virtually change clothes, hairstyles, and accessories. For example, sports fans can virtually try on team jerseys through an "AI Edit" icon in Stories or by restyling their profile pictures.

These additions are part of a broader push by Meta to integrate AI across its platforms. Recent months have seen the introduction of animated profile pictures, AI-powered automatic replies for sellers on Marketplace, and an AI assistant for creators offering personalized suggestions for posting and audience engagement.

While these AI features aim to make Facebook more engaging and useful, they also raise concerns about the reliability of information. Given that "AI Mode" and similar tools summarize content from everyday users rather than vetted sources, there's a risk of disseminating outdated or misleading information. This issue has previously been noted with other AI search implementations.

Meta's strategy appears to focus on increasing engagement and diversifying revenue streams. Alongside these AI rollouts, the company has launched subscription plans for its platforms, indicating a move towards monetizing advanced features, with more AI-related subscription tiers anticipated.
