Musk’s xAI is running nearly 50 gas turbines unchecked at its Mississippi data center

Elon Musk's xAI is operating nearly 50 natural gas turbines at its Mississippi data center, which are currently unregulated by the state. This loophole exists because the power plants are classified as “mobile” units as they are situated on flatbed trailers. This classification allows them to bypass air pollution regulations for a year.

The NAACP has filed a lawsuit and requested an injunction against xAI, representing residents concerned about the environmental impact. They argue that unchecked emissions from these turbines are exacerbating air quality issues in an already compromised region. The Southern Environmental Law Center, also involved in the lawsuit, asserts that xAI is violating federal law, which stipulates that even trailer-mounted power plants can be deemed stationary and subject to air pollution controls.

Originally, xAI had secured permits for only 15 turbines. Despite earlier indications that approximately half of the 35 turbines operating in May 2025 would remain, the company has continued to install additional units. Current reports indicate that xAI is now operating 46 turbines.
