John Jumper, a Nobel laureate for his work on AlphaFold, is leaving Google DeepMind to join rival Anthropic after nearly nine years. He led the AlphaFold team at DeepMind, an AI model that predicts protein structures. His departure follows that of Character AI co-founder Noam Shazeer, who joined OpenAI.
Jumper expressed gratitude to DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis for the opportunity to lead the AlphaFold team. He acknowledged the valuable experience gained at DeepMind and wished the team continued success in their discoveries.
Bloomberg reports that Jumper was also a key contributor to Google’s efforts in developing coding tools, an area where the company has faced challenges in commercialization.
