OpenAI and Malta partner to bring ChatGPT Plus to all citizens

Malta and OpenAI have announced a pioneering partnership to offer ChatGPT Plus to all Maltese citizens. This initiative, a global first, includes a comprehensive AI literacy course designed to empower citizens with practical AI skills and foster responsible technology use. The program aims to integrate artificial intelligence into daily life, making it accessible and understandable for everyone.

The "AI for All" initiative, developed in collaboration with the University of Malta, will provide a course covering the fundamentals of AI, its capabilities, limitations, and ethical applications. Upon completion, citizens will receive one year of free access to ChatGPT Plus. The first phase of this program is set to launch in May, with the Malta Digital Innovation Authority overseeing its implementation and distribution.

Silvio Schembri, the Maltese Minister for Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects, emphasized the importance of this initiative in bridging the digital divide. He highlighted that the program ensures all citizens, irrespective of their background, gain the confidence and skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world. This partnership positions Malta at the forefront of global technological change by transforming complex AI concepts into practical assistance for families, students, and workers.

George Osborne, Head of OpenAI for Countries, commended Malta's vision, noting that the country leads Europe and the world in making AI accessible to all. He stressed the critical role governments play in ensuring their populations have both the access to and skills for leveraging AI effectively. This strategic initiative is expected to accelerate AI adoption and deliver transformative benefits to both the economy and the daily lives of individuals.

This collaboration underscores a growing international recognition of the need for practical AI education and application. Malta's model, which combines a localized course with direct access to advanced AI tools, serves as a blueprint for national AI adoption strategies. It reflects OpenAI's "for Countries" initiative, which tailors AI solutions to meet specific national priorities, encouraging wider adoption and utilization of AI technologies.
