OpenAI launches new Codex tools for white-collar work

OpenAI is intensifying its focus on enterprise clients with the introduction of new capabilities for Codex, its agentic AI tool. The update aims to broaden Codex’s applications beyond its traditional software engineering user base, targeting a wider array of knowledge workers. This strategic shift follows an internal report highlighting Codex's diverse uses in the workplace.

The company has launched six new plug-ins tailored for specific professional roles, including data analytics, creative production, sales, product design, equity investing, and investment banking. These plug-ins, accessible within the Codex app, integrate instructions and context to enable the AI to perform job-specific tasks effectively right out of the box, with further enhancements through user customization.

In addition to the plug-ins, OpenAI introduced a "Sites" feature, allowing Codex to generate interactive websites from its output instead of just local files. This initiative involves partnerships with several platforms like Wix and Figma, with plans to expand its partner ecosystem. Another new feature, "Annotations," enables users to specify parts of documents for more precise commands and contextual operations.

These enterprise-focused developments come shortly after OpenAI established the OpenAI Deployment Company, a joint venture with over $4 billion in funding. This venture is dedicated to integrating OpenAI’s tools more deeply into businesses globally, reinforcing the company's commitment to enabling AI to perform increasingly meaningful work within organizations and streamline its integration into existing infrastructure and workflows.
