Rivian adds a new onboard AI assistant to its latest software update

Rivian has introduced an AI digital helper, the Rivian Assistant, in its latest software update. This assistant offers deep integration into the EV’s subsystems, allowing control over various vehicle functions and personalized interactions. It aims to enhance safety by providing hands-free control and information access while driving.
Rivian is recognized as a leader in vehicle software, distinguished by its innovative approach to electric vehicle electronic architecture. This led to a significant investment from Volkswagen Group. Despite not supporting phone mirroring through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, Rivian’s in-house infotainment system is highly valued by its owners.
To compensate for the absence of phone mirroring, Rivian has launched a new AI digital assistant with its latest software update, compatible with both older Gen1 (2024 and older) and newer Gen2 models. This feature is part of the 2026.15 software update and is available to Connect+ subscribers or those on a trial.
The Rivian Assistant can be activated via a steering wheel button, an icon on the infotainment display, or through voice commands such as “Hey Rivian” or “OK, Rivian.” Operating within Rivian’s private cloud, the assistant offers deep integration with the vehicle’s subsystems, similar to offerings from BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
This advanced AI can manage vehicle settings, climate control, navigation, media, messaging, and calling. It can also access the owner’s manual, answer questions, search for information, and assist with in-car alerts and troubleshooting. Users can personalize the assistant through the Rivian mobile app, enabling it to connect with calendars and remember preferences like frequent destinations or preferred music genres.
While some may express reservations about LLM-based technologies, the Rivian Assistant enhances safety by allowing drivers to reschedule meetings or find dining spots using voice commands, thereby minimizing smartphone distractions.
