Spotify takes on Google’s NotebookLM with its new app
Spotify has launched "Studio by Spotify Labs," a new desktop app that allows users to create personalized podcasts from their digital information like emails and calendars. This app, currently in research preview, competes with Google's NotebookLM by offering AI-generated audio briefings and content based on user input.
Spotify has introduced "Studio by Spotify Labs," a new standalone desktop application. This app allows users to generate personalized podcasts by integrating with their emails, calendars, and other digital data. It aims to provide daily audio briefings and custom content.
The application leverages an AI agent that can browse the web to fetch personal information. This enables users to make multi-step requests, such as creating a daily audio brief for a road trip that includes calendar events, booking details, and dinner spot recommendations.
All AI-generated podcasts are saved in the user's Spotify library for private listening and are synced across devices. They are not publicly accessible. Spotify cautions that this is an early preview, and the AI may occasionally produce unreliable content.
"Studio by Spotify Labs" is being released as a research preview in over 20 markets to select users aged 18 or older. It directly competes with Google's NotebookLM, which has previously popularized similar podcast generation features. Other companies like Adobe and ElevenLabs have also adopted this format.
This launch signifies Spotify's ambition to expand its involvement in diverse audio offerings. The desktop app could potentially lead to further integrations for podcast creation and may even evolve into a comprehensive system audio notetaker.
