Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky is reportedly establishing his own artificial intelligence lab, moving beyond his previous role as an AI kingmaker. This decision places him among numerous Silicon Valley leaders who are actively investing in cutting-edge AI research. While Airbnb has integrated AI coding tools, Chesky previously expressed that existing large language models weren't yet suitable for a partnership.

Chesky has a long-standing relationship with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, stemming from their connection through Y Combinator in 2006. He regularly advised Altman on managing a hyper-growth tech company and played a role in Altman's return to OpenAI after a temporary ouster, offering guidance on public relations and rallying support.

Despite his close ties, Chesky is now entering a competitive landscape with his mentee's company. The specific focus of his new AI lab remains unclear, though Bloomberg suggests an emphasis on user interaction and design, areas that have been central to his work at Airbnb. This initiative echoes efforts by others, such as Brett Adcock's Hark AI lab, which is developing novel user interfaces for AI assistants.

Chesky will not be taking an operational role as founder of the new lab, opting to remain as Airbnb's CEO. The future leader of this venture will face the challenge of competing with established AI labs while also potentially navigating the involvement of a chairperson known for meticulous oversight.
