Amazon hopes to challenge Nvidia more directly by selling its AI chips

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is exploring the sale of its proprietary AI chips, Trainium, to other companies for use in data centers. This initiative, highlighted by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, signifies a potential expansion into a new market, with an estimated annual run rate of $50 billion if the chips were sold to third parties. These discussions aim to challenge Nvidia's dominance in the AI chip landscape.
AWS has historically utilized its AI chips internally, benefiting from a "waterfall effect" where chip usage drives demand for other cloud services like storage, security, and networking. However, the immense demand for these homegrown chips, with current and future Trainium capacities selling out rapidly, has prompted Amazon to consider external sales.
Selling these chips externally presents a strategic shift, as it would require Amazon to manage current customer demands while potentially navigating manufacturing challenges.
