Anthropic has acquired the dev tools startup used by OpenAI, Google, and Cloudflare
Anthropic has acquired Stainless, a startup specializing in automating the creation and maintenance of software development kits (SDKs). This acquisition removes a key infrastructure supplier from Anthropic's competitors, including OpenAI and Google, who previously utilized Stainless's technology.
Anthropic has acquired Stainless, a startup known for automating the creation and maintenance of software development kits (SDKs). Stainless's technology converts API specifications into production-ready SDKs across various programming languages, automatically updating them as APIs change. This innovation eliminates the time-consuming manual maintenance process.
The acquisition, though undisclosed in terms, was reportedly valued at over $300 million. This move strategically removes a key infrastructure supplier from the hands of Anthropic's competitors, including OpenAI, Google, and Cloudflare.
Stainless's SDK tools are highly valuable for companies building AI agents that connect to external software and complete user tasks. However, following the acquisition, these tools will be exclusively available to Anthropic, cutting off access for its rivals. Stainless CEO Alex Rattray noted that Anthropic was an early supporter, making the integration an easy decision.
Existing Stainless customers will retain full rights to modify and extend the SDKs they have already generated.
