Built to benefit everyone: our plan
New technological advancements, such as AI, have historically transformed daily life and significantly improved human well-being. This article outlines a plan for developing AI that broadly benefits humanity by empowering individuals and distributing its advantages widely, while carefully managing its inherent risks.
Every few generations, a new technology completely reshapes society. Historically, electricity significantly improved daily life by extending the day, automating strenuous tasks, and enabling new conveniences like radio. These advancements led to substantial increases in average lifespan and income, driven by improvements in healthcare, sanitation, and living standards. These changes were largely fueled by widespread electrification and related technological progress.
AI is poised to bring about a similar transformation. This technology will soon be capable of extraordinary feats, but its true impact lies in what people can achieve with it. AI can help individuals with diverse tasks, from navigating medical bills and learning new skills to starting businesses, caring for elderly parents, and making scientific discoveries.
Our approach is built on the belief that AI should serve humanity, empowering individuals to pursue their goals, enhance their capabilities, and ensure the widespread distribution of its benefits. We are committed to building AI that is accessible to everyone, allowing them to utilize it as needed, where and how they need it.
While we are optimistic about AI's potential to expand human capabilities and prosperity, we are also keenly aware of the risks. Powerful AI systems must remain safe, aligned with human intent, and under human control. Our mission at OpenAI is to ensure that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) truly benefits all of humanity, meaning we must build systems that augment human judgment rather than replacing it.
The future we envision is not one where everything is automated. Instead, AI should assist people in achieving their goals, not detach from them. As AI systems become more capable, the human role of setting direction, making tradeoffs, applying judgment, and instilling values and responsibility becomes even more critical.
To facilitate the responsible development of AI, national and global coordination will become increasingly important. We advocate for an international organization to help coordinate leading AI efforts and mitigate catastrophic risks. Cooperation and shared safety standards are essential, especially given the competitive landscape. Such an organization should enable coordinated global action, including the ability to slow frontier AI development when necessary, to ensure societal resilience, safety, and alignment keep pace. We are entering our third phase at OpenAI to achieve these ambitious goals, which include accelerating the economy through AI and giving everyone on Earth a personal AGI.
