Elon Musk’s SpaceXAI has been bleeding staff since its merger
SpaceXAI, formed from the merger of SpaceX and xAI, is reportedly losing significant talent, with over 50 researchers and engineers departing since February. This exodus includes key leaders and core pre-training staff, raising concerns about the company's commitment to developing leading AI models amidst reports of an extreme work culture and unrealistic deadlines set by Elon Musk.
Elon Musk's newly rebranded SpaceXAI has reportedly seen a significant exodus of talent since its merger in February, with over 50 researchers and engineers departing. This includes key leaders in coding, world models, and Grok voice, along with a substantial portion of the core pre-training team. Rivals like Meta and Thinking Machine Labs have actively recruited former SpaceXAI employees.
The departures followed the acquisition of xAI by SpaceX and its subsequent renaming to SpaceXAI earlier this month. The departure of team lead Juntang Zhuang and other pre-training staff has raised concerns within and outside the company about its commitment to developing leading AI models, as pre-training is crucial for building new AI models.
Sources indicate that Musk's demanding work culture, characterized by extreme pressure and unrealistic deadlines, contributed to some of these departures. Employees across Musk's various companies, including Tesla, have previously voiced similar complaints. These pressures reportedly led to compromises in the development of Grok.
However, some exits might also be driven by financial motivations. SpaceX regularly offers tenders allowing employees to sell vested shares. With high expectations for a future IPO, some employees may feel confident in their equity's liquidity, leading them to seek opportunities elsewhere rather than enduring high-pressure environments at a company whose AI development future is increasingly questioned.
