Mistral is rumored to be raising €3B at €20B valuation
Mistral AI is reportedly in talks to raise €3 billion, which would value the French AI firm at €20 billion. This significant funding would nearly double its valuation from last September, highlighting its rapid growth and position as a key European AI player.
Mistral AI, a French AI laboratory, is reportedly in early discussions to raise approximately €3 billion. This funding round could value the company at around €20 billion, almost double its €11.7 billion valuation from a Series C funding round last September. This rapid increase underscores Mistral AI’s growing influence in the AI landscape.
Established in 2023, Mistral AI aims to democratize frontier AI. Unlike its American counterparts, Mistral AI employs a more open approach to AI development, offering foundational large language models with open weights, enabling broad customization. The company also provides specialized closed models for applications like programming, voice cloning, and optical character recognition.
Mistral AI has strategically positioned itself as a sovereign, homegrown alternative in Europe, particularly as European nations seek to reduce reliance on American technology. The company is actively setting up a data center near Paris and has forged partnerships with the French army, the government of Luxembourg, and several major European corporations.
Despite its significant progress, Mistral AI has raised approximately $4 billion to date. This is a fraction of the funding secured by its U.S. rivals, OpenAI and Anthropic, which have attracted $186 billion and $161.25 billion respectively. The disparity in valuations reflects the substantial lead American labs have in revenue, model adoption, and enterprise demand.
